2006 Relay for Clean Air Poised to Begin, Friday August 18

A March for Our Right to Breathe Clean Air- Sign Up to Participate

The third annual Relay for Clean Air will begin on the North Carolina-Tennessee border at the Newfound Gap parking area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Friday, August 18, 7pm. Four bicycle riders will carry the "Clean Air Now!" flag seventeen miles to the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway on the first of forty-one legs, to set in motion a dramatic chain of humanity comprised of walkers, runners and more bicycle riders, that will bring the flag one hundred miles in 24 hours to Asheville and a Clean Air press conference and rally on Saturday night.

The purpose of the Relay for Clean Air is to focus national attention on the issue of poor air quality in the greater Appalachian region of our country.  The National Parks in the Great Smokies and on the Blue Ridge are the most visited in our nation, while being the most polluted. These treasures of our national heritage are being devastated by acid rain and dangerously high ozone levels, endangering the health of people who live and visit here. This is a protest march in which we are asserting our right to breathe clean air and demanding public policies that will result in strong enforcement of air quality regulations and a conversion to technologies that are more environmentally responsible.

In Asheville, the press conference/rally will begin at 7pm, Saturday, August 19, in the parking lot next to BioWheels bicylce shop, 76 Biltmore Avenue.  Speakers will include Buncombe County Commissioner David Gantt, Asheville City Council member Robin Cape, Beth Trigg from the office of NC Representative Susan Fisher, Michael Shore of Environmental Defense, Valerie True of Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Avram Friedman of the Canary Coalition and poet Thomas Rain Crowe.

There is still time to sign up for the Relay for Clean Air. Call toll free 866-4CANARY (866-422-6279) or email info@canarycoalition.org

SEEEXPO August 25, 26 and 27th

Volunteers needed to help staff the Canary Coalitoin information table

The Southeast Energy and Environment Expo is the second largest renewable energy fair in the nation and so much more. A mental feast of exhibits, workshops and networking in a party atmosphere.

This year the Energy at the Crossroads Tour is making a special "originally unscheduled" stop at SEEEXPO, one of the highlights of which is a performance of the satirical news panel discussion "All perspectives", 2:30-3:30pm, Saturday the 26th.  If you missed the Tour stop in Asheville last March or want to see it again, here's your second chance.

There are free entry tickets available for a limited number of volunteers who help with tabling. email or call toll free 866-4CANARY (866-422-6279)

Energy at the Crossroads Tour to Continue

in South Carolina in mid-September

The Energy at the Crossroads Tour will continue on September 12, 13 and 14 in South Carolina at Greenville, Charleston and Columbia respectively.  The Tour took a vacation in the summer, but now we're back rousing the masses through humor, music and other stimulating information delivery techniques, as we work to prevent the construction of a new generation of nuclear and coal-burning power plants while promoting energy efficiency, conservation and safe, renewable energy and transportation technologies. Help get the word out about the Tour when it comes through your area.  Stay tuned.

Membership Renewal Reminder

If you have not already done so, please renew your annual membership with the CanaryCoalition and help keep the database updated with your most recent contact information. There is no annual membership fee, although all donations are gratefully accepted (and very much needed). All new and renewing members receive the interactive membership computer CD. The membership CD is a powerful tool that aids its owner in being a clean-air activist. It contains a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation about air quality issues and the Canary Coalition that can be shown to friends, groups, classrooms, etc. Also on the membership CD is a library of documents containing information about important air quality issues. There are also graphics for iron-on applications, printable membership forms and a link to the Canary Coalition website. For donations of $35 or more tee-shirts are available upon request.
