THE 2009 RELAY FOR CLEAN AIR

The 2008 Relay for Clean Air moves up Biltmore Ave, in Asheville, as night descends

In western North Carolina, climate change and air pollution are not distant threats to our well being.  In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and on the Blue Ridge Parkway, on any given day, we can witness the effects of acid rain, acid haze, excess nitrogen deposition, deadly ozone levels and the devastating potential of climate change that has introduced new diseases, insects, invasive plant species and parasites into our forested region.

Since 2004 the Canary Coalition has coordinated the Relay for Clean Air, a 100-mile civil rights march, to focus national attention on this unique bio-region and the ecological disruption facing the people, wildlife and vegetation who inhabit it.

The Relay is divided into 37 segments, some for walkers, some for runners and some for bicycle riders.  Sign up for one or more segments to participate.  We also need volunteers and medics during the course of the day.

In the coming weeks we'll be posting the schedule, flyers and news releases.
