• Service Learning Projects for Students

There are many areas of research for the Canary Coalition that are very appropriate for service learning projects for students in the area of demographics, technological, legal and regulatory developments on power plant emission control technology, renewal energy and transportation issues. • Conducting a telephone survey on air quality issues

This survey was designed to help the Canary Coalition understand what specific air quality issues are most important to most people.  The results will be used to help convince legislators and regulators to take actions where necessary.  The survey will also help to increase the size of the Canary Coalition membership as it identifies those who are motivated most strongly on air quality issues.  This volunteer activity can be performed from the home or in the Canary Coalition office.

• Data entry

People are needed who can type and are familiar with database programs and spreadsheets. In some cases volunteers can help from their home computers with this activity.  But, some of this work needs to be performed in the Canary Coalition office.

• Tabling at Events

The Canary Coalition often sets up an information table at community events, concerts, street festivals, running events and elsewhere.  Volunteers are needed to take shifts handing out literature, getting signatures on petitions and signing up new members.

• Button making

• CD preparation

The Canary Coalition was given about 4000 CDs and tapes of local Asheville musical artists singing environmentally related songs. We are giving them away, but first they need to be opened and stuffed with a small membership/donation request.

• Tasks for people with advanced computer skills

The Canary Coalition is always in need of people who are familiar with PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Page Design Programs

• General Office Work

Volunteers are always needed in the office to help answer telephones, perform research on the internet and other tasks.

• Recruiting New Members

This is an activity that every Canary Coalition member can be engaged in everywhere he or she goes.  As the Canary Coalition grows, so does its ability to influence elected officials and goverment regulators.  Membership is the most important strength of the Canary Coalition.
